Locked Out of Your Apartment in Brisbane? Here's What to Do

Apartment lockouts have a few extra wrinkles that house lockouts don't — security doors, building access systems, no side gate to check, and sometimes a body corporate or building manager in the mix. If you're standing in a corridor or lobby right now without your keys, here's exactly what to do, in order.

Step 1 — Check building access first

Before calling anyone, a few quick checks can save you time and money:

• Building manager or concierge. Many Brisbane apartment blocks have an on-site manager during business hours who holds a master key or fob register — worth a knock or a call to the building office.
• Body corporate emergency contact. Larger complexes often have an after-hours number for building emergencies, listed near the mailboxes or lift lobby.
• A neighbour or flatmate. If someone nearby holds a spare key or fob, this is the fastest fix of all.
• Digital access. If your building uses an app-based fob or smart entry system, check whether you can re-trigger access from your phone.

Keep in mind the building manager can usually only help with common areas and the main entry — they typically won't have a key to your actual front door. For that, you'll need a locksmith.

Step 2 — Know who's responsible if you're renting

If you're a tenant, the answer depends on when it happens:

• Business hours: Call your property manager first. Under Queensland tenancy law they're expected to help arrange access, and many keep a spare key on file for exactly this situation.
• After hours or weekends: Most agencies have an emergency line, but response times vary a lot and callouts aren't guaranteed to be quick. If you can't reach anyone within a reasonable time, a locksmith is your next step — you can usually be reimbursed later if the lockout wasn't your fault (check your lease).

What to have ready when the locksmith arrives

Same as any lockout, we'll need to confirm the property is yours before opening the door. Useful things to have on hand:

• Photo ID (driver's licence or passport)
• Your unit number and building entry instructions (intercom code, buzzer number, or how to let us in the front door)
• Lease agreement or a recent utility bill if you're a tenant
